Immigrant song

Well, this is it. It seems fitting that my departure from this green and pleasant land is marked – nay, protested – by the sibilant, persistant hiss of rain. Very British.

There’s little left to say for now. Today will be spent fixing all the last minute things one must fix, and packing. Packing packing packing.

I’ve been making a mental list of things I should keep in mind for the trip, by the way. So far:

– Be diplomatic.
– Maintain a polite and friendly demeanour.
– Avoid Ron Paul.
– Pretend I am related to Anthony Head at all times.
– Don’t have too purdy a mouth.
– Do not eat this.
– Avoid Ron Paul.
– Don’t mention the socialist conspiracy.
– Absolutely do not jaywalk.
– Avoid Ron Paul.

Any other suggestions?

Anyway, the next time I update, I shall be nestled in the cortex of your country, burrowing in.

But don’t worry! I’m benign!

See you in Philadelphia.

Most important: don’t act like a tourist.

    Ordinary Americans don’t:
    Wear flags in any manner
Talk about America in normal conversation

If you go into a business and they have a TV on Fox News, avoid paying attention to it. Someone will try to make conversation about what’s on, and it’s never anything good.

Don’t remind people that we have a medieval-grade healthcare system. There’s a good chance you’ll find someone who’s dying because they can’t afford a treatment, in poverty because they’re trying to afford it, or thinks that the system is in perfect shape. The former two will likely be deep in depression over it, and the latter won’t be convinced unless you’re intimately familiar with all sides of the issue and can persuade them toward sanity.

Chitterlings are quite nice in Brittany, not sure about America.
